Lisa Batres and Natalia Alas Durán are two Latina therapists who have come together to create an empowering and culturally attuned private practice. As two friends who met in Boston College's MSW Latine Leadership Initiative program, they quickly realized that they shared the same values of making mental health services more accessible to BIPOC communities. Years later, after they both reunited in Austin, Texas, they began talking about what it would be like to start a practice together. Having spent most of their careers working with immigrant and first-generation clients, they found that they both truly enjoy working with this population so they began to envision what it would be like to dedicate a practice to them. Despite their initial nerves about launching a private practice, they recognized the importance of collaboration in doing something new, which they felt was a way model what they hope to offer to their clients. This led to the creation of Sin Miedo Counseling, PLLC—because embarking on new journeys and trying difficult things is often easier with someone who understands and supports you along the way.
Understanding the unique challenges faced by individuals who are the first in their families to navigate various life experiences—be it pursuing higher education, living with chronic illness or taking care of someone who has one, or being the first in the family to seek mental health services—Lisa and Natalia aim to provide a safe and collaborative environment for those who are trying to step out of their comfort zone.
Both therapists bring a wealth of personal and professional experience to their practice. As children of immigrants, they deeply resonate with the struggles and triumphs of their clients, from breaking unhealthy cycles to finding ways to honor generational wisdom. They recognize that seeking therapy can be a daunting step, particularly for those who may feel isolated in their experiences or uncertain about the counseling process. They also know what it means to grow up in families or communities where mental health isn't a "real thing" or even talked about. Their mission is to empower individuals by equipping them with the tools, strategies, and language to make sense of their experience and to work towards healing.
Together, they are committed to breaking down barriers and making mental health resources more accessible, advocating for the well-being of their clients, and celebrating the strength of their communities. Through their work, they hope to inspire a new generation to embrace mental health care as a vital part of holistic well-being.
