Looking for EMDR therapy in Austin, TX? At Sin Miedo Counseling, we offer EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) for teens and adults working through trauma, anxiety, chronic pain, and chronic illness. We offer sessions available in person in Austin, Texas, and online across Texas and Massachusetts.
EMDR is a well-researched, evidence-based approach for processing trauma and it can also be very effective for depression, anxiety, and even chronic pain. It can help when something that happened to you still feels like it's happening now, such as when you feel your body is stuck in survival mode or when your body holds onto a memory long after your mind has tried to move on.
EMDR uses guided eye movements or other forms of bilateral stimulation (including audio and tactile) to help your brain reprocess difficult memories so they no longer carry the same emotional charge. It doesn't require you to talk through every detail of what happened, which can make it feel more accessible than traditional talk therapy for some people. Our clients also share that they find EMDR helps them to go "deeper" and find relief from experiences they have been processing for many years in traditional talk therapy.
We use EMDR with clients navigating:
A Culturally-Affirming Approach to EMDR
As bilingual, bicultural therapists, we bring an understanding of how culture, family, and identity shape the way trauma is carried and processed. EMDR doesn't happen in a vacuum. We include your history, your language, and your community are part of the work. We hold space for all of it, allowing you to reprocess memories in your native language and honoring your pacing so things don't get too overwhelming.
EMDR Therapy for Teens
Adolescence comes with its own weight, and for many teens, that weight includes experiences they haven't had the language or space to process. EMDR can be a good fit for teens because it doesn't require talking through every detail of what happened, which can make it feel more approachable than traditional talk therapy.
Lisa Batres, LCSW-S, is well-versed in using EMDR for tweens, teens, and young adults. She uses EMDR with teens navigating:
Trauma, including bullying, family conflict, or difficult life transitions
Anxiety and depression tied to past experiences
The stress of being first-generation or navigating identity within their family or community
Difficult or sudden life changes, including loss or major transitions
She tailors EMDR to fit where a teen is developmentally, at a pace that feels safe and collaborative, never rushed.
EMDR for Chronic Illness and Chronic Pain
Living with chronic illness or chronic pain comes with its own kind of trauma. There sometimes is a form of grief of a body that doesn't feel like yours anymore, the exhaustion of being dismissed or misunderstood by providers, feeling isolated, and the weight of explaining yourself over and over again.
Natalia Alas Duran, LICSW, LCSW-S is trained in the EMDR Chronic Pain and Illness Protocol, a specialized adaptation of EMDR designed for the unique ways chronic conditions affect the nervous system. This work can help with:
Processing medical trauma, including difficult diagnoses or experiences with providers
The grief and identity shifts that come with chronic illness
Pain that intensifies under stress, anxiety, or emotional flare-ups
Feeling disconnected from or at odds with your own body
Somatic presentations of distress and trauma, held in the body like nausea, frequent headaches, etc.
This isn't about replacing your medical care. It's about giving your nervous system a chance to process what your body has been carrying, so you can move through daily life with a little more ease.
What to Expect
EMDR is typically integrated alongside other approaches we use, including trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy (TF-CBT), narrative therapy, and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), depending on what fits you best. There's no one-size-fits-all path and if you have questions about where to start, we'll talk through what feels right for where you're at.
